Peperomia Care Guide – The Perfect Low-Fuss Houseplant

Peperomia is a diverse and charming genus with over 1,000 species, making it one of the most varied houseplant families around. Compact, easy-care, and available in a stunning range of textures and colors, Peperomia is perfect for shelves, desks, and small spaces.

Light

Peperomia thrive in medium to bright indirect light. They can tolerate lower light but may grow more slowly. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can fade or scorch their leaves.

Watering

Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry — typically every 1–2 weeks. Peperomia store water in their thick leaves and stems, making them very drought-tolerant. Overwatering is the #1 cause of problems, so when in doubt, wait.

Humidity

Average household humidity is fine. They're more tolerant of dry air than most tropical houseplants, though they'll appreciate a light misting occasionally.

Temperature

Peperomia prefer temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C). Keep away from cold drafts, air vents, and temperatures below 50°F.

Soil & Potting

Use a light, well-draining potting mix — a blend with perlite works great. They prefer to be slightly root-bound, so don't rush to repot. Every 2–3 years is usually sufficient.

Propagation

Peperomia are easy to propagate from leaf or stem cuttings. Place a cutting in moist soil or water and roots will develop within a few weeks.

Common Issues

  • Mushy stems or yellowing leaves — overwatering or root rot
  • Wrinkled leaves — underwatering
  • Leggy growth — needs more light
  • Brown leaf edges — low humidity or inconsistent watering

Pet Safety

✅ Peperomia are non-toxic to cats and dogs — a great choice for pet-friendly homes!
