Calatheas are beloved for their stunning patterned leaves, but they do have a reputation for being a little fussy. With the right care, though, they'll reward you with lush, dramatic foliage that transforms any indoor space.
Light
Calatheas prefer bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight will scorch their leaves and fade their beautiful patterns. A spot near a north or east-facing window is ideal.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Calatheas are sensitive to chemicals in tap water — if possible, use filtered or distilled water, or leave tap water out overnight before using. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Humidity
These are tropical plants and love humidity. Aim for 50–60% humidity. A pebble tray with water, a humidifier nearby, or grouping plants together all help.
Temperature
Keep them in temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Avoid cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and sudden temperature changes.
Soil & Potting
Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. Repot every 1–2 years in spring when roots start to outgrow the pot.
Common Issues
- Brown leaf edges — usually low humidity or tap water sensitivity
- Yellowing leaves — overwatering or poor drainage
- Curling leaves — underwatering or too much direct light
